- Throwing toilet paper in the trashcan
- Homeless, malnourished dogs, everywhere
- Washing my hands with cold water and wiping them on my jeans to dry
- Roosters crowing and dogs barking at all hours of the day, but most notably from 2:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
- Co-existing with the spiders in the corners of my room and our office
- Solid dish soap
- Eating some combination of beans, rice, corn tortillas, potatoes and/or eggs at every meal
- Tile floors
- Tissues and paper towels are luxury items
- Ants that manage to find even the tiniest crumb on my bedroom floor
- Drinking only bottled water
- Jelly, mayonnaise and other condiments are not refrigerated
- Frequent power outages
- Driving at least thirty minutes to get anywhere - the grocery store, the movie theater, church, the mall
- Men peeing on the side of the road; some don't even bother to turn their back to you
- The absence of driving rules; just be aggressive and go with the flow or you'll never get anywhere
- Receiving the majority of my text messages from Movistar
- Mosquito bites; my legs look like they've been through a war and lost
